Following a rocky start to the season with two consecutive losses, the Nashville Predators have shaken things up in their forward lineup. The team surprised fans as Steven Stamkos, who initially played as a winger, was spotted practicing as a center alongside Cole Smith and Jonathan Marchessault at Centennial Sportsplex on Monday.
Coach Andrew Brunette revealed that the move was aimed at giving Stamkos, who has yet to score for the Predators, more opportunities to find his rhythm on the ice. Stamkos, known for his prolific career in Tampa as a center, seemed to welcome the change.
Brunette explained that while the decision to shift Stamkos to center wasn't entirely unexpected, the addition of Smith to the line raised some eyebrows. Smith, recognized for his physical presence rather than playmaking skills, is seen as someone who can create space for Stamkos to operate effectively.
Despite initial skepticism, Brunette believes that Smith's attributes could complement Stamkos well. The coach hinted that the lineup adjustments might not be permanent and that further evaluations would follow after practice to gauge their impact.
Smith, expressing surprise at his new role alongside Stamkos and Marchessault, vowed to bring his usual energy and dedication to the game. The Predators are gearing up for their next match against the Seattle Kraken at Bridgestone Arena on Tuesday at 7 p.m.
