January 15, 1949 - January 2, 2025
It is with heavy hearts we announce the passing of Daniel Buford Russell Sr., who passed away on January 2, 2025, just before his 76th birthday. Born on January 15, 1949, in Beechgrove, Tennessee, to the late Danny and Mary Russell, Daniel was a man of great heart and skill, leaving behind a legacy in both family and industry.
Daniel's life was a testament to hard work and innovation, beginning his career as a welder and fabricator. His passion for his craft led him to become the Operations Manager at Holt Specialty Equipment, where he was revered as the "king" for his unmatched welding speed and ingenuity. Daniel contributed significantly to the waste management industry, developing several inventions to better serve customers in major metropolitan cities.
Family was at the core of Daniel's life. He was a devoted father to his children, Tabitha, Troy, Daniel Jr., and Greg Russell, and took immense pride in his 12 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren, each of whom brought him boundless joy and laughter. His love for his family was as strong as his love for the work he did, often combining the two by teaching his children and grandchildren the value of craftsmanship and dedication. Daniel's partner of 15 years, Gena Sherman, was a constant source of love and support in his life.
He also loved his sisters, Judy, Thelma, and Lillian, sharing with them a bond that was both deep and enduring.
In his personal life, Daniel cherished the simple pleasures - tending to his garden, walking in the woods, and cutting trees on his land. He enjoyed driving fast cars and tinkering in his garage, especially with his sons, sharing these moments as both hobby and bonding time. He also loved chatting on the phone with family, sharing his wisdom and stories from his life, which began in very humble beginnings, living in homes with dirt floors as a child. This background shaped his character, teaching him the value of hard work, perseverance, and the importance of family. Daniel found great solace and joy in reading the Bible and talking about God, his faith being a cornerstone of his life.
Daniel is survived by his partner, Gena Sherman, his daughter, Tabitha Russell, sons, Troy, Daniel Jr., and Greg Russell, along with his numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren, sisters Judy, Thelma, and Lillian, all of whom will carry forward his legacy of love, work ethic, and innovation.
The visitation for Daniel will be held on Monday, January 6th, at 11:00 AM, followed by his funeral service at 2:00 PM at Daves-Culbertson Funeral Home in Tullahoma, TN. In lieu of other gestures, the family kindly requests that friends send flowers.
Daniel Buford Russell Sr. will be deeply missed, but his teachings, inventions, and the love he shared will continue to resonate through all who knew him. Rest in peace, King. Your legacy of love and labor will guide us always.
