On the morning of December 12, 2024, Agnes “Aggie “Louise Alt from Tullahoma passed away peacefully with loved ones by her side at the Lantern at Morning Pointe in Franklin Tennessee. Aggie was 86 years old.
Agnes was born in Johnstown, Pennsylvania on August 28, 1938, to John and Stella (Erlinger) Aust. She grew up with a large extended family of grandparents, aunts and uncles and cousins. She graduated from Johnstown Catholic High School in 1956 and from Mercy Hospital School of Nursing in Johnstown in 1959. She began her nursing career at Mercy Hospital.
On May 13, 1961, Aggie married Robert “Bob “Alt at Saint Joseph German Catholic Church. By 1963 Aggie and Bob decided to move their young family which now included two daughters from Pennsylvania to Tennessee for a job opportunity for Bob at Arnold Engineering Development Center. In 1967 when Harton Hospital opened its doors in Tullahoma, Aggie resumed her nursing career which would last 38 years. In the early 1970s, Aggie jumped at the chance to work in the area of coronary care nursing. She was certified to teach Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) and was trained to interpret heart rhythms on an EKG. She had found her calling. Aggie was a patient, kind, and knowledgeable teacher of nurses and others training in the Critical Care Unit. Her coworkers, hospital staff, and patients praised her compassion, generosity, kindness, and knowledge.
Another of Aggie‘s passion was exercise. When she was in her mid 30’s she started to run and over the years she added swimming and cycling to her exercise regimen. Over a 40 -year period she competed in numerous road races, triathlons, biathlons, and even completed over 25 marathons, including Boston and Honolulu.
But the biggest accomplishment of Aggie’s life is her family. She was so proud of her daughters and grandchildren. She was a wonderful mother and grandmother, who was always so loving, supportive, encouraging and willing to lend the hand when needed. Aggie was a wonderful cook and loved preparing delicious meals for her family and friends. She has left her family and friends with wonderful memories, and she will never be forgotten.
