On Thursday evening in Chattanooga, the Franklin County Rebelettes took on Signal Mountain in the TSSAA High School state high school soccer tournament. The teams knew the winner would take on Sation Camp for the state championship on Saturday. The Bison defeated Tennessee High School 2-0 in the first semifinal.
It was a defensive battle in the first half, as neither Franklin County nor Station Camp could find the back of the net, resulting in a 0-0 tie at the break.
The Rebelettes’ offense played much better, and they were finally able to score. At 65:47 of the second half, Sadie Moore crossed a pass in front of the goal from right to left and found Cali Banks, who scored the game’s first goal. At the 74:42 mark of the half, Banks drew a penalty kick after beating two Bison defenders near the goal. Osiris Rodriguez would line up the PK, and she drilled it in the top left corner to give Franklin County a 2-0 advantage. They held onto that lead to improve to 19-3-1 on the season and earned their first-ever state championship bid.
The Rebelettes will play Station Camp at Boyd Buchanan High School in Chattanooga on Saturday, with kickoff set for 3 PM CT, in the Class AA state championship game.
After the game, Coach Kent Bean posted the following on Facebook. What a night! We have fought our way to the AA State Championship game this Saturday. These girls have squeezed every bit of soccer they could out of this season. It’s hard to tell from the smiles, but these girls are beaten, bruised, and exhausted. You would have to look for a long time to find more grit, determination, and heart. Every year, the last day of the state tournament is typically filled by teams from big cities or suburbs of large towns. Not this time! Franklin County is representing this year! One more to go!
